Complement Factor H (CFH)

Complement Factor H (CFH) is a glycoprotein and regulatory factor for the alternative pathway of complement activation. It is a complement control protein that protects host cells from complement by a self recognition system, in which CFH binds to “self cell regions” not found on pathogen surfaces. Gene variants in CFH have shown strong associations with age related macular degeneration and an atypical form of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. Alterations in serum CFH have been seen in lupus nephritis, Alzheimer's disease, and lung cancer.
