Bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP-9)
Bone Morphogenic Protein 9 (BMP-9) is a secreted signaling molecule within a subfamily of the TGF-beta superfamily. BMPs were originally identified as regulators of cartilage and bone formation. There are at least 20 structurally and functionally related BMPs, most of which play roles in embryogenesis and morphogenesis of various tissues and organs. BMP-9 has been shown to play a role in learning and memory, the induction of hepcidin expression in the liver, bone formation, and glucose homeostasis.
