Dickkopf-related protein 1 (DKK-1)

(Dickkopf related protein 1) Member of the Dkk protein family. Secreted as a precurser protein. Inhibits Wnt pathway including LRP5/6 and beta-catenin interactions. Found to regulate joint remodeling in arthritic animal models, increased DKK-1 levels linked to bone resorption and decreased levels to new bone formation. DKK1 may play a key role in regulating pre-osteoblast differentiation and the development of multiple myeloma-associated osteolytic bone lesions. Dkks may play a role in bone diseases, Cancers & Alzheimers disease. Elevated in serum of Multiple Myeloma, Prostate cancer and Rheumatoid Arthritis patients. Decreased circulating levels found in Ankylosing Spondylitis. Possible target for theraputic treatment of Dkk-1 related diseases.
