Platelet-Derived Growth Factor BB (PDGF-BB)
Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a glycosylated, disulfide-linked dimer that is a potent mitogen for cells of mesenchymal origin. There are 2 polypeptide, A (16 kDa) and B (14 kDa), sharing about 50% sequence identity. They form homo and heterodimers. The expression of each dimer varies by type of cell. The three forms of PDGF have different but overlapping biological activities. The major source of PDGF in human blood is platelets, where PDGF-AA and -AB are stored and released when platelets are activated. A-A and B-B, as well as A-B, dimers can bind to the PDGF receptor. Platelet-Derived Growth factor beta (PDGF-BB) detects the PDGF-BB homodimer, with little cross- reactivity to PDGF-AA and PDGF-AB.
