Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH)
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) is a 39 amino acid polypeptide hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It stimulates the adrenal cortex to boost the synthesis of corticosteroids, often in response to biological stress. It has little control over secretion of aldosterone, the other major steroid hormone from the adrenal cortex. Pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) is the precursor to this hormone which is cleaved into several active polypeptides including adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the anterior pituitary gland.
