As the population ages and the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s rises, there is an ever increasing need for earlier diagnosis. Detecting the disease before dementia sets in may be the only hope for therapies set to stave off the cognitive decline associated with it. Nature Medicine recently published data from a longitudinal study reporting ten biomarkers in blood plasma, all phospholipids, that had lower concentrations in people who had or proceeded to develop cognitive impairment. A simple, non-invasive test that could predict dementia would be a breakthrough for Alzheimer’s research. https://www.nature.com/news/biomarkers-could-predict-alzheimer-s-before-it-starts-1.14834
